Topic: Kelly Cover Songs

a few people have commented to me recently that they heard others singing kelly songs, thinking they were cover versions, when in fact, KElly's versions are the cover versions..

so for those few (and others who may not have known), here is a lsit of songs Kelly has covered for albums..

Just Missed The Train - 1996 - Danielle Brisbois who wrote it and sang backup on KElly's version. anielle re-released the song on her 2007 album and made it a single due to the popularity of Kelly's version.

Anytime - 2002 - A debatable cover song as 2 other artists had released it, one prior to the Thankful album, and one at the same time as a choir version. Only Kelly's version became popular.

A Moment Like This and Before Your Love - neither written specifically for Kelly, were songs for the taking. Idol chose them for whoever wins season one, which happened to have been Kelly. Several have recorded both songs, with the only versions being well known are Kelly's, and Leona Lewis's version of AMLT.

Miss Independent - 2002 - Xtina - also a debatable cover as Xtina's was never released, or finished. She scrapped the song after a demo version (which was available on some of xtina's sites), and the music was totally redone for Kelly's version (plus Kelly wrote a bridge for the song). In some ways, Kelly's version can be considered almost an entirely differant song as only the main lyrics remained from Xtina's version.

Respect - 1970's - Aretha Franklin - Orignally covered by Kelyl on Idol, was recorded and used in a movie soundtrack (and charted briefly). was also used as a bonus track on some import cd's of Thankful.

Natural Woman - Carole King/Aretha Franklin - pretty much the same as Respect. Aretha and Carole (who wrote it) released the song about the same time, with Aretha's become the more famous version known, however, Carole had more overall success with the song, but since she was more a songwriter than a performer, Aetha is creditted as the biggest artist for the song.

Open Arms was the closing song for the Independent tour. Kelly and LCay did it as a duet, switching who started the song (one show Kelly, the next show Clay)

you're not missing much with XTina's version, it was an unfinished demo, really slow and boring.

You can search the XTina sites, you'll probably come across an mp3 of the demo. It's been a few years now, but i'm sure people there still have it.

haha i watched that, it was extreamly akward..lol but it like had a totally different meaning kinda, well i guess it was kinda akward for me cause im used to justin and kelly sing it...oh well lol

oooh i love that verison, its so pretty, and whoever asked that question its on youtube somewhere

ooh and one more thing "oh holy night" (the kelly verison acapella) is so pretty, its probably the best verison ive heard of the song i've heard ever, and im not just saying that cause im a kelly fan, its breathtaking!
