Saddest Celeb Story You've heard lately
« on: April 13, 2009, 08:33:47 AM »
the saddest one I've heard lately is that Newman & Woodward were supposed to have had 4 children instead of three but she miscarried their first child on their honeymoon at about 5 months pregnant

here's a film capture from their wedding that shows her pregnancy so beautifully that it's almost too heart wrenching to look at knowing that a couple of wees later they'd suffer the worst agony anybody could ever endure but it pulled them closer together rather than pulling them appart as he struggled to console her the one true love of his life who felt as though she let him down by not being able to carry the baby to full term and deliver it healthfully

Good question, Courtney. The tragic skiing injury and passing of actress Natasha Richardson shocked me when I first heard about it. I loved Natasha's performance in "The White Countess." It's my favorite Merchant Ivory production. Great writing and acting!

thanks for your reply clint and yeah Natasha's death was a tragic one but I didn't want to go for the obvious and the one I posted caught my attention cause they are my favorite couple in cinema history so it made it all the more poignant  and I've also always thought she looked even more gorgeous pregnant and I'd never heard about it until I read it in Imdb.com messageboards because neither of them ever spoke about it publically becaause of the fact their respective film studios at the time wouldn't let them because of the sexual moraes of the era and the fact that he wasn't divorced from his first wife Jackie Witte with whom he had three young children Scott 7 Susan 4 and Stephanie 3 when he got her as they say today Knocked up on the set of the Movie Long Hot Summer in late september early October 1957 about a week or so into the 1 7/8 month shooting Sechuedle which ended up over time and over budget anyway

here's a picture of them together during one of her later pregnancies
aren't they just darling together here as she tries in vain to hide the fact she's expecting again so the paparazzi don't pounce on them and try to take pictures of her growing belly and I think it's even sweeter because he's holding a stuffed animal in his suit jacket

sadder was he wasn't able to be with her when she had the miscarriage because he'd flown back to NY to film The Movie Cat On A Hot Tin Roof which must have been tortoure for him being away from her the love of his life as she recovered from losing the baby they'd so deeply loved must have been heart wrenching for him though he made up for that on weekends after  she healed and came back to the states

here's a Picture from the happier days of their honeymoon

aren't they precious here only to have their dreams shattered a week or so later when without warning the pregnancy ended in a miscarriage their first public appearence together after which was the Premier of Long Hot Summer at Batton Rouge Louisiana March the 5th 1958 the night before filming for Cat on A Hot Tin Roof Began which my favorite scene in that film also had to be the most emotionally wrenching for Paul to shoot the one where brick and Maggie are Locked in the bedroom and he tells her their going to make the baby because after all he'd just lost an unborn child

Ironically enough the day the shooting of TLHS started 9/23/1957 was also the day The Three Faces Of Eve premiered in Atlanta Georgia and that film won Joanne the oscar for best actress in a leading role six weeks after the tragic loss of their unborn child which is why the studios sat them up in the balcony of the panteges theater to keep a lid as far as  possible on the loss of the baby though her crying as she excepted the award she thought Deborah Kerr would win that evening for Heaven Knows Mr Allison which was her third of six career nominations all of which mrs Kerr lost

here's the Video of Joanne Winning her Oscar
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gaXSSwMFjog&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gaXSSwMFjog&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> as she's going to the podieum to receive the award John Wayne who was the presenter that evening reached out and hugged her as if trying in some way to comfort her as he could sense how much she missed the baby cause by that time he had four children of his own and though none of his wives had ever gone through that being a compassionate man he had sympathy for her & Paul in that rough time of having their hearts broken so profoundly by the loss of their precious child in utero

John Wayne's kids up to that point were
Michael born 11/23/1934
Toni Born 2/25/1936
Patrick Born 7/15/1939
Melinda Born 12/3/1940
Aissa Born 3/31/1956 {infact the oscars were aired just short of Aissa's second Birthday March 26th 1958 though back then they were pre-taped nearly a month in advance 3/1 just a week after she won the globe award for the same role though I believe they didn't appear at the golden globes because she still hadn't come home from england yet due to the recovery from losing the baby}

the funny part about the times her miscarriage is mentioned in shawn levy's book is the first time he misspells it but later on it's spelled correctly

here's the two excerpts the first from the top of page 134
at least she wasn't totally alone when he left to reherse for Cat On A Hot Tin Roof but still not having him there made the experience more painful than it already was
then here 10 pages later the M word is spelled correctly
some people never understand how painful a miscarriage is to the couple involved though some feel like a child isn't a child until it's born where usually the expectant parents feel like he or she is from the moment of conception and particularly in those days when a pregnancy was treated like an appendage of the mother or worse a disease though certain types of pregnancy are actually disease for example Chemical which can turn into cancer if left untreated

but thankfully in their case that one devastating loss turned out to be a fluke and they got three beautiful daughters after that

not that their daughters are a replacement for the baby they lost one child never replaces another but for Paul the adoring husband seeing Nell in Joanne's arms for the first time was so refreshing because she hadn't smiled like that in so long after their tragic loss but it wasn't until the first time he held Nell that he realized she was a heaven sent angel that had filed a longing in her mothers heart and his after they had lost her elder brother or sister just weeks after their marriage
