This Week in American Idol History, The Final Two: It All Comes Down to This

Season 1: The first season, there were no former Idols to distract from Kelly and Justin, and fans had no idea what to expect. It was fresh and new, and without precedent. Each of them sang the same two new songs written just for the show ? ?A Moment Like This? and ?Before Your Love.? These tunes were much better suited for Kelly, and Justin really never had a chance. He did get to sing ?Get Here,? but in the end, Kelly bested him with ?Respect.? Kelly won handily the next night (58% to 42% out of 15 million votes), and her performance of ?A Moment Like This? the second time around was unforgettable. A tearful and grateful Kelly became the first American Idol and has proven worthy of the title ever since.

Kelly?s post-Idol resume is impressive. Kelly?s first CD, Thankful, was released in April 2003 and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. It was certified double platinum in December. In 2004, she was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for ?Miss Independent.? She also toured with Clay Aiken in the winter of 2004.

Kelly?s second album, Breakaway, was released in November 2004. While early sales were not as brisk as they were for Thankful, consecutive releases of singles pushed album sales, which have exceeded ten million worldwide. She has toured almost non-stop.

In 2006, Kelly won two Grammys (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for ?Since U Been Gone? and Pop Vocal Album for Breakaway). Previous awards include two American Music Awards in 2005 (Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist and the fans? choice award for Artist of the Year), the ASCAP Pop Music Award in 2005 for ?Miss Independent,? two AOL Awards in 2005, 12 Billboard Music Awards (11 in 2005 and 1 in 2002), the 2005 People?s Choice Award for Favorite Female Performer, the 2005 Radio Music Award for Artist of the Year/Mainstream Hit Radio, five 2005 Teen Choice Awards, the 2006 Nickelodeon Kid?s Choice Award for Favorite Female Singer, and the 2006 Juno Award for Album of the Year (for Breakaway).

Kelly is currently working on her third album, which will be released at the end of this year. She recently signed with Ford to be part of their new ad campaign. She has recorded a new song, ?Go,? for the campaign, and this is expected to be on her next album. Ford will also be sponsoring her next tour.

Kelly?s grand success is a stark contrast to that of the season 1 runner-up, Justin Guarini, whose story is one of bad timing and poor management. His first self-titled CD was not released until June 2003, a full nine months after the end of season 1 and at the same time Ruben and Clay?s singles were hitting the racks. The album was poorly promoted and Justin was dropped by RCA Records. He was also forced to appear with Kelly in the first and only Idol movie, From Justin to Kelly, arguably the worst movie ever made. Kelly managed to escape this horrendous film unscathed, but it seemed to put the brakes on Justin?s career.
