Can Kelly get anymore G-Rated???
« on: November 28, 2006, 07:11:26 PM »
My local newspaper has done about 3 articles on Kelly in the past year (and I feel EXTREMELY blessed  ;D) and she was recently mentioned in my Sunday paper.  It's not anything big but I figured I'd quote it for you guys.  It was an article about how fast "tweens" are growing into "teens" nowadays...I was kind of angry (and I plan on writing in about it too) because apparently a woman thinks her 7-year-old daughter isn't old enough to listen to Kelly (umm...can Kelly can anymore 'G-rated'???? lol)

Claire Unterseher, a mother in Chicago, says she only allows her children-- including an 8-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter-- to watch public television.  And yet, already, they're coming home from school asking to download songs she considers more appropriate for teens.

"I think I bought my first ABBA single when I was 13 or 14-- and here my 7-year-old wants me to download Kelly Clarkson all the time," Unterseher says.  "Why are they so interested in all this adult stuff?"

ADULT STUFF??? PLEASE, lady!!! Kelly is a PERFECT example of a role model for both 7-year-olds and 20-year-olds!!! That woman is not going to be able to keep her daughter sheltered from GREAT music...it's not like you hear cursing every other second in Kelly's song...I think the only thing she has ever said was "the D word", if you want to consider that cursing...gosh, people make me wonder...

That's ridiculous. I was at work today wearing my Kelly tour shirt and one of the kids asked me who it was, and I said Kelly Clarkson. The little girl said that Since U Been Gone was one of her favorite songs.

I work with 5 year olds.

That's awesome  ;D  Here's what I sent in to the editor:

An article titled ?Teen Tweens?: Today?s Youths Growing Up Faster was recently published in the newspaper.  In the article, parents of today?s ?tweens? talked about how fast children grow up compared to their generation.  Being a teenager myself, I do agree that today?s children have access to things that should be off limits?whether it?s on television, the radio, or in their own home.  What astounded me, though, was how so many of the parents are trying to shelter their children.  To keep a child in this generation in the dark on subjects like sex and violence is almost impossible and instead of parents addressing the matter, they are making it worse by trying to protect their children.  Don?t parents want to have ?the talk? with their children before the kids learn it from their 9-year-old classmates at school?

Music is a major issue among over-protective parents.  I do not blame them one bit, though.  When the radio is turned on, you?ll probably hear rap music with 90% of the lyrics (that you can actually understand) being curse words.  I agree that action should be taken to limit the amount of violence and profanity that children can hear, but one woman in the article took it too far.

Claire Unterseher, a mother in Chicago, commented in the article with this statement:

?I think I bought my first Abba single when I was 13 or 14?and here my 7-year-old daughter wants me to download Kelly Clarkson all the time.  Why are they so interested in all this adult stuff??

Adult stuff? I suppose this woman knows nothing whatsoever about Ms. Clarkson.  I do not think Kelly Clarkson could make her songs anymore G-rated!  Out of all four albums she has recorded on, the only thing close to a curse word in her lyrics is the word ?darn?.  For goodness sakes, she has been on movie soundtracks such as ?Ella Enchanted? and ?The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement?!  She even recently sang at tributes for Reba McEntire and Tony Bennett.  Is Tony Bennett a bad influence on 7-year-olds?  Her songs have nothing to do with sex, drugs, or violence?they teach about real-life issues such as divorce and self-confidence.  What more could a parent ask for in a role model?

A tip for today?s parents?sheltering your children from things will not force every other parent in the world to do the same.  If you do not take the initiative to teach your children, one of their friends will.  And as for Ms. Unterseher, music is a teacher in itself and it does not necessarily always teach negative things.  You can try to shelter your children from the outside world, but please do not deprive them of culture and music.

I think prehaps what the mom thinks is Kelly's songs are very personal and brings out emotions such as Because of You and Behind Hazel Eyes. That to her is "adult music" personally I don't agree but, she probably feels that her kids are not ready to be expressed to such feelings and emotions. She is not use to the type of photo shoots that celebrities take and although Kelly's are not like Beyonce's or Xtina it can be seen as a little sexy style. I also don't think she is saying "Kelly Clarkson is the only adult music" I think she just expects her kids to be listening to Disney songs and stuff such as Hilary Duff and Raven.

Kelly is on Radio Disney as much as Hilary Duff and Raven and she's also on Disney soundtracks (which is why I pointed that out in my article)  Although Kelly may talk about divorce or love, so what??? Hilary and Raven sing (well, try to) about love in a less mature manner...and 5-year-olds know that love and divorce exist!!! There's no excuse for banning good music from your kids' lives.  Some might not even take the time to listen to the lyrics and just the instrumentals are proven to increase brain activity. But now I'm rambling...lol

Yeah, that is true. I'm just thinking that is what the mom would think. Hilary and Raven are more directed to little kids. Really, I'm surprised the mom would say that and about Kelly, Id understand if she said it about Rap or someone like Xtina, but not Kelly. I'm worried maybe she thinks her kids have those feelings about her and she doesn't want them to hate her. Or either like I said she doesn't want the feelings to show, but as we all know hiding them only makes it worse.
