for once a cool journalist

The nominations for the 50th annual Grammy Awards might represent how diverse the current state of music is, but I don't believe the nominees this time around necessarily reflect the best music has to offer.

Kanye West picked up the most nominations, with eight, followed by Amy Winehouse with six.

Foo Fighters, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and T-Pain each earned five nods, while Akon, Dierks Bentley, Chris Daughtry, Feist, Tim McGraw, John Newton, Ne-Yo, Rihanna and Bruce Springsteen earned four apiece.

West's album, "Graduation," and Winehouse's "Back To Black" earned Album Of The Year nominations, which came as no surprise to me. What did surprise me was not seeing Bruce Springsteen's "Magic" up for contention. I thought for sure it would be there, as well as Kelly Clarkson's "My December," but both albums were severely overlooked.

Foo Fighters' "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace," "These Days" by Vince Gill and Herbie Hancock's "River: The Joni Letters" round out the category.

Of Springsteen's four nominations, he did manage to get one for Best Rock Album. Clarkson didn't fair as well. She got only one nomination and it wasn't even for "My December." Clarkson and Reba McEntire earned a nomination for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for their duet of Clarkson's hit "Because Of You."

Clarkson's debacle with Clive Davis may be to blame, but with little or no promotion behind "My December," it didn't meet expectations. I still love the CD and would hope music lovers would give the disc a second listen, Grammy or not
.

The Record Of The Year category seemed more appropriate and representative of the last year in music. "Irreplaceable" (Beyonce), "The Pretender" (Foo Fighters), "Umbrella" (Rihanna), "What Goes Around ... Comes Around" (Justin Timberlake and "Rehab" (Winehouse) all were nominated. Any of these deserve to win, but I'm quite surprised to not see West's "Stronger" listed here.

Song of the Year threw me a little. Up for the Grammy are "Before He Cheats" (Carrie Underwood), "Hey There Delilah" (Plain White T's), "Like A Star" (Corinne Bailey Rae), Winehouse's "Rehab" and "Umbrella" (Rihanna).

Winehouse ought to win!

The Best New Artist award will either go to Feist, Ledisi, Paramore, Taylor Swift or Winehouse. You're probably thinking what I'm thinking: I've never heard of Ledisi and Paramore, but I have heard of Taylor. I didn't think she was all that swift. Feist is OK, but where's Daughtry? Or even Elliott Yamin? Again, this is Winehouse's to lose.

As for Kanye West, he's had a quite a year, both career-wise and personally. The loss of his mother will obviously weigh heavily on his mind, as she's always accompanied him to the Grammys in the past.

It'll also be interesting to see if Winehouse shows up on the night of Feb. 10 to pick up her awards. She doesn't have a very good attendance record at awards shows.

^^ Haha I agree! :D

Yeah I think it's ridiculous that MD didn't get a nomination, I have Amy Winehouse's and Kanye West's albums and to be honest I prefer My December to them both!

At least someone recognizes how good it is besides us and also how Clive didn't support it, which didn't help at all. :(
Hail Kelly! :)

thanks for posting.
I absolutely think Clive Davis is to blame, but...whatever.
And I also agree that Amy Winehouse is crap.
I've always hated the Grammy's.
In my opinion, they need to look at the artist's overall package and how they have affected fans, the music industry, and their relationship with the world.
Kelly-- Salvation Army supporter and healthy lifestyle promoter (Vitamin Water), giving a girl a scholarship to college...
Amy Winehouse-- spits on fans....

? I think the Grammy nominators are getting a little senile....

I agree.  Clive can be a bit flighty.  I mean, he almost doomed Bat Out of Hell, he surely got Jim Steinman pissed (and if you can quote what he said, then you get a karma)

Yeah, theys senile alrites
